Finally at the summit!

Two handballs and the cool head of Mark Noble, reliable as ever from the spot meant the Hammers leapfrogged Southampton at the top of the Championship for two days at least after a scrappy 2-1 win over lowly Forest.

Winning ugly is the true sign of champions isn’t it? That’s what I keep telling myself after leaving the game week in week out after yet another uninspiring win. With the home fans buoyed with the news over the P.A that centre half James Tomkins had signed a new contract. The expectation for a big win was high, but it was Forest who flew out the blocks and the game could have been so different had Forest taken their numerous first half chances. The danger signs were there for the Hammers as early as the 9th minute as Marcus Tudgay smashed over after good work from Chris Gunter. Former Hammer Marlon Harewood then really should have tested the West Ham goal from 6 yards out but Tomkins was there to get the block in.

The grumbles around the ground were there for all to see within the home faithful as they had expected so much more from their side. But they were given an unlikely cheer as a Jack Collison clipped cross hit the hand of Guy Moussi. It was left with Mark Noble from 18 yards; he smashed past Lee Camp despite the keeper’s best effort. The half time whistle went and the Hammers were top for the first time of the season. But the mood around the ground was that of relief instead of comfort. The home faithful realised we had got out of jail with that goal.

The second half came and the Hammers looked a lot more comfortable on the ball, but the ball wouldn’t hit the back of the net from open play, the need for a striker and a wide man is becoming desperate. West Ham’s second goal came from the penalty spot again, after from where I was sitting looked a quite baffling decision, but I have been reliably informed from my Dad sitting far closer to the action that the ball did in fact hit Gunter’s hand. Noble stepped up again and sent Camp the wrong way, that boy doesn’t get enough praise for his reliability from the spot. It’s been a long while since Dicks and Steward that we could rest easy knowing that when we get a penalty you expect it to hit the back of the net.

The chant of “we are top of the league say we are top of the league” the chant that was sung so briefly last weekend was in full flow around the ground. The Hammers in truth should have stretched their lead; Jack Collison had two superb opportunities to put the misses that have haunted him to bed. But after a Messi like run he produced a Heskey like finish blazing over with an aid of a deflection. Followed by an even worse miss after a flying save from Camp it fell to the young Welshman only for him to shank it horribly wide.

To their credit the Forest fans stayed to the end and sang their hearts out and were rewarded after a superb goal from the impressive Lewis McGugan who from fully 30 yard let fly with a cracking effort which flew past the helpless Green. Could McGugan be the man West Ham have been looking for? Still moving on…

Just 30 seconds later and the referee relieved the home fans by blowing up for full time. The game itself wasn’t a memorable fixture for sure but the Irons go home top of the league and having picked up 3 more vital points towards promotion.

Man of the match- Winston Reid- the New Zealander had a blinder and has impressed me every time I’ve seen him this season. Reid put his body on the line for the team and won numerous headers to starve off the thread from Forest. Here’s hoping for many more impressive performances from the Kiwi.
