FIVE things you need to know about our new signing

|

He will not have an instant impact – When West Ham have a fully fit defensive line George John will probably see himself on the bench. However with the Hammers regular injury woes he will provide us with the flexibility and support we need. At age 24 he will need time to adapt to the notorious pace of English football. Without a competitive game since October, he also needs some serious conditioning before we can expect to see him at his best.

He wants to be here– If you ask any FC Dallas fan they will tell you John wants to be in England. Following a breakdown in his transfer to Blackburn Rovers six months ago his future in the US has been uncertain. He will want to make a name for himself in England, so we will be sure to see him give it his all at West Ham.

He’s an international… sort of – He has trained with the United States national team and is tipped to be a hot prospect for the future; although he is no spring chicken, now aged 24, most home grown American footballers still go through college and do not play professional ‘soccer’ until they graduate. He is also eligible to play for Greece, and has trained with them too.

He is the fifth American to play for West Ham – John Harkes, Ian Feuer, Jonathan Spector and current Hammers reserve Sebastian Lletget make up the other four. Of these only Jonathan Spector has made an impact here at Upton Park, with 115 appearances. Although his performances were not always well received by the Hammers fans he ended his time at West Ham on a high, being highly influential in the 4 – 0 Carling Cup win over Manchester Utd, and enjoying his role in attacking midfield.

He is a consistent performer – Reading through various MLS websites, blogs, and watching videos of John it is clear he is very good in the air and should prove very effective defending set-pieces. FC Dallas blogger Steve Fenn also regards him as a consistent player who rarely makes errors; highlighting that he was ranked 8th best performer in the MLS last season by Opta-statistic Castrol Index.

I thought Daniel Potts was American so surely this makes him the 5th?

  • Mike says:

Steve Potts was also American. Daniel Potts (son of Steve) was born in London. So he has a dule passport. He has represented the US under 21’s.

Being only the 8th best performer in the MLS is hardly a recommendation, seeing as Mr Beckham is still considered a premium superstar in that league……

John was ranked as high as #2 at midseason in the same ranking. At that time Henry was ranked #1.
John was in the top 10 all season. Beckham never broke into the top25.
With that said Beckham still has game.
