Do we really need strengthening?

|

There has been much speculation as of late about who will make Big Sam’s January transfer target list? Many names have been thrown into the mix, none other than West Ham academy graduate now Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand.

Obviously these rumours have to be coming from somewhere but if even half of these are true Big Sam and West Ham are set up for a seriously busy January transfer window. However at the moment we are sitting second in the table with a lot of players set to make a return to the squad soon so do we really need to bring anyone in?

Big Sam has to take into many factors when bringing in new players, will they fit in? But most importantly are they good enough to play in the first team? At the moment I feel we have a strong starting 11 and surely for any new player it will be hard to break into it as all positions are taken by good players. However it’s always good to have cover when there are injuries or when fatigue plays its part on the squad.

Personally I don’t think Allardyce should really be looking to bring in unproven players in the near future, what can they bring us that players like Cristian Montano and Robert Hall can’t? If there is anywhere that seems like the flaw of the side it is the defence as we seem to be leaking a lot of goals lately. In a dream world Ferdinand is someone that would be a fantastic signing but of course what price will he come at?

A full squad can never really be perfect, well perhaps Barcelona but that’s hardly a fair comparison, so any strong signings I’m sure will be welcomed and make a good addition to the squad as we continue in our battle for promotion.

Defence? Leaking golas? We have only conceded 2 goals in the last four keeping three clean sheets and have the best defensive record in the leauge and the most clean sheets kept? I don’t really think the defence needs sorting out

I agree that we need to strengthen our defence as our first choice centre backs consist of just Tomkins, Faye (injury prone) and Reid (injured).

However, to say that “we seem to be leaking a lot of goals lately” is a bit strong. 4 clean sheets in the last 6 Championship games, with only 3 goals conceded in the other 2. 8 clean sheets in 16 Championship games with only 13 goals conceded, less than a goal a game.

I would like to see a few new faces to freshen things up, a centre back, maybe someone wide right as our crossing from Faubert & Sears has been poor of late and maybe another smaller striker in place of Piquionne (who is just plain lazy). We have Carlton and Big John so we don’t need any more big Centre Forwards but someone similar to Baldock to give us options in case he gets injured.

Yes in essence that was the message I was trying to get across. The defence at the moment seems to be too weak and we are relying on Rob Green far too much to save us.

It would be nice to see a defender and as you say a replacement for piquionne who I think is awful.
