A third of the way…

|

So we’re now a third of the way through the season…our quest for immediate promotion back to the Premier League seems to be on track. We sit 2nd at the moment with an almost two points per game points average which is the blue-print for automatic promotion laid down by Big Sam at the start of the campaign.

The season thus far has been a tad frustrating…on two separate occasions we’ve had the opportunity to scale to the summit of the Football League…and twice we’ve squandered it. Against Millwall a win at the New Den would’ve taken us to the top and yet we only managed a drab draw, our second opportunity came in the shape of league leaders Southampton at St Mary’s and again we failed to get the win that would’ve left us top of the pile.

Nevertheless we sit 2nd and are handily placed to launch an assault on top spot, I’m encouraged by the fact that we have match winners returning to the squad such as Matt Taylor and Henri Lansbury, both of whom were sorely missed the night we failed to put Bristol City to the sword. The return of Cristian Montano from his loan spell also greatly intrigues me; he seems to possess the creativity, guile and invention that we’ve lacked in the tighter contests of this season.

Southampton can’t surely keep up their relentless pace from now till the end of the campaign, injuries and suspensions are par for the course during the war of attrition that is the 46 game Championship season. And with the quality and depth of within our ranks we’re in a much better position to deal with this eventuality, let’s see how consistent the Saints are once they lose a few bodies.

If I were to give a half-term style report on West Ham this season I would highlight as a significant area of improvement ‘late goals’ this season we’ve dropped 4 points from such goals (2 points against Cardiff and Ipswich respectively and another 2 against Leeds) had it not been for such late defensive lapses we’d only be a point off top spot and 4 clear of the chasing pack.

Consistency is the other concern; with the team so far failing to win at least three games in a row, winning streaks are the hallmark of any promotion winning side and we must improve on this aspect if we are to usurp Southampton.

With a third of the season gone we sit in a healthy position to attack the rest of the campaign, we have the best squad within this division and that should ultimately give us the edge over our promotion rivals.

So far it’s been satisfactory, but there is potential yet to be realised.

Clearly you don’t know much about Saints we have been rotating our players all season! Saints have already had injuries and suspensions but they still keep winning. You don’t always have to have famous names to be a good team. It’s not Saints who have been dropping points in the games they should have won.

Another thing to consider West Ham, Nigel has a substantial transfer kitty which he didn’t spend in the summer, plus our chairman is also willing to invest further if we are in the hunt come Jan, write us off if you like, we have spent the vast majority of our history being the underdog! The pressure is all on you.

We have had the best player in the league out for a third of our season already. When Lallana is fully fit, people will start to realise how good we actually are.

  • Hammersam says:

Lol lala or whatever his name is?!? Give me a break! We are 5 points off and playing badly wait till we play good. We will make a statement at coventry expect a drubbing!

If you had the players weve had injured you wud be struggling.

Anyway its next season that counts and with – reported 25-30 kitty for big sam once we go up, lets see who stays up!

    The futures bright…the futures claret!

Is that £25-30 quid? Your £100 million in debt! You’re almost as deluded as Pompey fans were….

You don’t sound too nervous Chris P. After all it’s not like you are hanging around West Ham sites to post your negative views is it?? I don’t have a problem with Southampton fans but it’s Saints fans like you who are an embarrassment to the rest. Get a life and don’t be such a pussy.

  • All the mouthing in the world wont change the fact that Southhampton are a little team in a little town who have lived in the shadow of Pompey for years. We at West Ham have something in common with Portmouth fans we both have real supporters and unlike southampton who aint called the scum for no reason (strikebreaking ring any bells) if the scummers are honest they will admit they will never be able to compete with teams like us and any visit to the EPL for them will be short and painfull get real all ten season ticket holders of southampton at the end of the year you will be happy with 10th a result by your standards.

  • bye bye Scott Parker says:

Iron Clad = i think your the nervous one son, nothing at all wrong with Chris P comments, and it’s Hammer fans like you who are an embarrassment – as for ‘bristol hammer’ (Pompey fan me thinks) your obviously more interested in Saints – i read a good article on them in the Mail with regard to their Academy, you might want to read it numbnuts, Pompey are a shower of ****.

    • Iron Clad says:

Thanks for your response Chris P (or bye bye Scott Parker!)It cheered me up to see that my comment got so far under your skin ‘son’. (Very scary!) Really, how old are you? I enjoy a bit of banter with real fans including the Saints but you need to improve the maturity of your responses or just give up.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and i’m sure we can look forward to you pretending to respond as a different angry Saints fan very soon.
