Big Sam… a quick fix or a lasting appointment?

|

The topic of Sam Allardyce within the realms of East London is a prickly one. There are those like myself who may not totally agree with his style/tactics but can see that the man is doing a good job in leading us back to Premier League as we sit 2nd at the half-way stage of this gruelling Championship season; a mere three points from the summit. And there are those who just cannot get behind his more direct style and are convinced that we should be walking this league like Newcastle did two years ago.

As I’ve already revealed I do believe Sam is a quality manager, in my humble opinion he is comfortably the best manager we’ve had since Alan Pardew. The big issue with Sam as far as some supporters are concerned is style of play that he employs; it is more direct, at times the team will bypass the midfield and go straight up to whichever of our plethora of target men is on duty in that particular game. It’s not the ‘West Ham way’ but I don’t think we should be too concerned with those treasured beliefs at this particular moment in our history. The only objective this season is promotion; wouldn’t we all rather gain promotion automatically playing a more direct game than end up in the end of season lottery playing with a more aesthetically pleasing style?

I would like to think upon promotion back to the Promised Land; Gold and Sullivan would back Sam to bring in the sort of players who will allow us to play more of a passing game…perhaps this season it’s more of a case of labouring for our art.

Looking towards the future (provided we’re promoted this season) I really reckon the future under Sam could be bright, unlike a lot of clubs within the realms of Albion there is genuine potential at West Ham; the fan-base the club possess is easily within the top 10 of the land, being a London club is a major advantage because its where all foreign players want to play and live and lastly we consistently produce quality young players…doesn’t that sound like a recipe for sustained success?

For far too long now we haven’t had the right man in place to capitalise on all of the aforementioned but in Sam we have a manager who has shown particularly at Bolton Wanderers; a club with nowhere near the potential or the resources of WHU what he is capable of.

I’m going to end this piece with an astonishing fact…In his final four seasons at Bolton Sam Allardyce produced four consecutive top 10 finishes a record of consistency at the time only bettered by Arsenal. Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea. Just think what he could achieve with a club with far more behind it.

Some of what your saying I totally agree with, let Big Sam get us back to the Prem, but I have seen alot of matches this year that if we play like we have in the Prem, we would have been hammered. With the squad we have at the moment we would be going straight back down playing like we have this year and thats not a nice thought I have been through the yo yo years at Westham
