Harry Redknapp has admitted that he finds it “strange” that West Ham supporters are so willing to express their frustration at the club’s owners.
The Hammers have struggled this season, and have just one win in their last nine Premier League matches, but Redknapp has jumped to the defence of David Sullivan and David Gold.
Speaking on talkSPORT, as quoted by Claret & Hugh, he said: “I hope they turn things around, West Ham, and at the moment they are showing a lot of faith in the manager but he needs some results quickly, Pellegrini.
“Normally they turn on the manager but the fans seem to be getting the hump more with the owners rather than the manager which I find strange.
“The owners have backed the manager, they’ve spent money – maybe they’ve got to look at who is bringing the players in who are not good enough.”
OPINION
These are odd comments from Redknapp, truth be told. Obviously, fans have very right to be disgruntled with the manner in which their club is performing at the moment, and they have the right to direct that frustration at whoever they please. To suggest that fans aren’t calling for Pellegrini’s head is shortsighted and a little naive, but just because the fans have a right to be annoyed with the manager doesn’t mean that they can’t be annoyed with the owners too. After all, they are the ones who have repeatedly overseen underwhelming season after underwhelming season at the club, and they are the ones who seemingly continue to misspend their money on signings and managers that just aren’t working. Nobody is necessarily calling for Gold and Sullivan to walk away, or anything that drastic, but at the very least they need to be cdl to some kind of account.
