Danny Mills has suggested that West Ham United goalkeeper Roberto has no future at the club after a nightmare couple of months at the London Stadium.
The Sky Sports pundit claimed that after the Spaniard was replaced by David Martin, there isn’t much chance of him being recalled to the starting lineup before Lukasz Fabianski returns from injury.
Mills heaped praise on Martin, admitting that all the former Millwall man has to do while deputising for the Pole is to stay solid and not make as many mistakes as Roberto did in East London.
“I would think so. I can’t see him getting back in for some time now,” he told Football Insider on Thursday.
“That will do Martin the world of good and the confidence it will give him, he’s just got to be solid, not make any silly mistakes and he’ll keep that until Fabianski comes back in.”
OPINION
There are no surprises here, none at all. Mills is spot on with his verdict on Roberto, who really shouldn’t expect any more action in the first team. No one will be expecting to see the Spaniard at the London Stadium anymore, with the keeper not keeping any clean sheets during his two-month spell in goal, and really he lasted longer than anyone actually expected thanks to Manuel Pellegrini’s stubbornness to change his side. If a striker didn’t find the back of the net for two months then he will have been shipped straight out of the team, so add a few mistakes in each outing on top of no clean sheets and Roberto was simply nowhere near good enough to make it in the Premier League. Football Insider reported that Pellegrini had given the green light for him to be sold in the January transfer window so that all but settles the future of the keeper at West Ham.
