OPINION
West Ham United centre back Issa Diop continued his poor start to the season with another dismal performance in the Hammers’ shocking 3-2 defeat to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. The Frenchman was being talked about as one of the better centre halves in the Premier League this time last year, but his form has fallen off a cliff since the turn of the year. That continued once again, here, as he made a mess of Spurs’ second goal and was then bullied by Harry Kane for the third. Eventually the former Toulouse man was hooked for a central midfielder in Carlos Sanchez just after the hour mark. It was a substitution that was greeted with boos from the home fans at the London Stadium, but likely more so because of who was coming on than Diop being replaced. These are grim times for the Hammers, and Diop’s slump in form has contributed to that. Yes, he was up against one of the better centre forwards on the planet on Saturday, but he was still beaten far too easily. Kane’s destruction of the Frenchman effectively forced Manuel Pellegrini to bring the 22-year-old off – it was that sort of day for the young centre half.
