The West Ham United board may apply their right of veto on potential January signings, according to Claret & Hugh.
The reliable Hammers news source claims that David Gold and David Sullivan have so far given manager Manuel Pellegrini and director of football Mario Husillos a free hand in the transfer market.
Now, though, they are keen to ensure Husillos, in particular, makes no more errors like the signing of flop goalkeeper Roberto last summer.
The Irons co owners remain supportive of Pellegrini and Husillos and both men continue to have their backing. However, they will be taking more of a hands-on approach in the transfer market come the New Year.
OPINION
This is very interesting. Clearly Gold and Sullivan had tremendous faith in the Pellegrini-Husillos pairing when they first arrived at the club, and even after their debut season in east London. That’s understandable given their credentials and the fact that signings like Felipe Anderson and Fabian Balbuena performed so well last term. However, the owners’ confidence in them has evidently been rocked this campaign. You can see why, too, because much of what they did last summer has backfired. Roberto has been a car crash, Pablo Fornals anonymous and Sebastien Haller isolated. Furthermore, they sold too many strikers and failed to address the full back positions. It makes sense that Gold and Sullivan would be concerned heading into January. It doesn’t sound like they want to meddle too much, but they will put their foot down if a potential signing with so many red flags, a la Roberto, looks like it’s close to completion. West Ham fans should be happy about that, because Husillos clearly can’t be trusted to carry out business unattended.
