Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has confirmed that West Ham United midfielder Josh Cullen is out of action until after Christmas.

The 23-year-old had to be substituted off with what looked like a serious injury in the Addicks’ 2-2 draw with Cardiff City on Saturday, and Bowyer has now confirmed the worse.

“Josh is going to be out a while, a fair while,” he said, as per London News Online. “Longer than Lyle, not the season, but he won’t be back before Christmas. He’s done his ligament, a few of them. It’s not good.”

OPINION

This is a real blow for Cullen, Charlton and West Ham. The youngster has been doing great work in the Championship this season, and has been a crucial part of Bowyer’s side. However, he is now going to miss a significant stretch of time and will have to really work hard on his recovery to come back from an injury as serious as ligament damage. This pretty much ends the chances of West Ham recalling him in January, something which has been mooted given how poor the team have been in midfield so far this campaign. That’s not good for the Hammers, but mostly this is immensely dispiriting for the player. The statistics show that he has been doing really well this term. As per WhoScored.com, Cullen has scored once and provided one assist, while he is averaging 1.4 key passes per game to go with 1.9 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 1.4 clearances. He has been excellent, but now he’ll have to regroup and go again in the New Year.
