West Ham defender Issa Diop will be a target for top four clubs in the Premier League, according to Paul Robinson.
The French defender has been a mainstay of the Hammers’ side since joining the club last summer, and ex-England stopper Robinson has suggested that his performances could attract attention from some of the biggest teams in the country.
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “Any centre-half as a goalkeeper you can trust is a dream.
“Diop’s proven this season that he’s reliable, strong, very very capable and he’s been a part of West Ham’s success.
“He is good enough for a top-four team. He’s obviously been heavily scouted, and it was a coup for West Ham to get him.
“He will be one of these players that will be watched constantly, he’ll be monitored by the bigger teams and if he continues to do what he does, perform the way he does, he’ll have top-four options going forward.”
OPINION
To be fair, it has always felt as if Diop was destined for big things. The only question is, can he achieve them with West Ham? It’s sometimes easy to forget that the Frenchman is still only 22, and he plays with an authority and assurance far beyond his years. So far this season, for example, he has averaged 1.2 tackles, 1.6 interceptions, and 4.1 clearances per game, as per Whoscored, and is often the Hammers’ standout defensive player. You would expect him to get better and better as he matures too, and if that is the case, and if the Hammers fail to start climbing the Premier League table with any kind of intent or regularity, then don’t be surprised to see some big names come sniffing.
