Negotiations have come to an end between West Ham United and Sevilla over the potential signing of Javier Hernandez, according to Marca.

The Spanish outlet claims that an injury picked up by Michail Antonio in the Carabao Cup victory over Newport County has put an end to talks.

Marca report that despite the Mexican international not being a part of Manuel Pellegrini’s plans, the injury to Antonio has closed the door on a potential £8.2million deal.

It was suggested that the Spanish club had intensified talks with the Hammers over a move, but will now have to look elsewhere with Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic also on their radar.

OPINION

It definitely makes sense for West Ham to keep Hernandez, and not only because of the injury to Antonio. The Mexican seems to be above new signing Albian Ajeti after he started the game against Brighton after Sebastien Haller picked up a knock, and Pellegrini will certainly want to keep the more experienced heads in his dressing room. On top of that, although European clubs have until Monday to complete their deals, Premier League sides have already seen their window come and go, and the Hammers wouldn’t be able to go out and find a replacement. The 31-year-old is a real poacher and could score some really important goals for his side this season, just like he did against Brighton in that draw, in a game where he didn’t register a single key pass or complete one dribble [WhoScored], he still popped up to score the opening goal, and sometimes that’s all you need from your forward.
