West Ham’s pursuit of Maxi Gomez is over after the Hammers failed to agree a payment structure with Celta Vigo regarding his £45million release clause, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster claim on their live transfer blog (09/07, 15:13) that the Irons had offered to pay the eight-figure clause to secure his capture but that the two clubs were unable to come to an agreement over how the money would be paid to the La Liga side.

It is stated that the collapse of negotiations means that Gomez is closing in on a move to Valencia instead, the Spanish side said to have offered both cash and players to secure the striker’s capture, and that he will travel on Wednesday (10 July) to seal the switch.

Opinion

Whoops. West Ham seemed hell-bent on getting Gomez in as their replacement for the departed Marko Arnautovic but it appears as though they will have to return to the drawing board to find someone to fill the Austrian’s boots. A price of £45million was always going to test the Hammers’ spending ability and it appears that even with Arnautovic’s exit they could not afford to splash that sort of cash. You can understand why Celta Vigo have stuck to their guns over his exit though – at 22-years-old with 12 international caps and 71 La Liga appearances under his belt, not to mention his 31 top flight goals, he has the potential to be something special in the future. Where do West Ham turn next? You would imagine they have a list of alternative options lined up but that will not take away from the fact they seem to be missing out on their top target. This is definitely not how the Irons would have imagined their summer going.
