West Ham United are unwilling to pay the release clause of West Brom striker Salomon Rondon, according to Football London.

The online football news source claim that a straight bid of £16.5million will be enough to confirm the signing of the Venezuelan international.

However Football London reports that Hammers officials do not want to pay that figure for a player who will turn 30-years-old in September, but that they may need to should no striker have arrived towards the end of the window.

West Ham were reported by the Daily Star to have had an offer of £10million plus Sam Byram and Jordan Hugill rejected by the Championship club.

OPINION

It appears that West Ham are entering a state of desperation in their hunt for a striker. The unpredictability of the deal surrounding Celta Vigo forward Maxi Gomez most likely means that the Hammers shouldn’t have made their feelings clear in regards to the West Brom striker. With Manuel Pellegrini being reported by reliable club source, ExWHUemployee to be wanting at least two forwards this summer, it would come as a shock that the club doesn’t want to pursue Rondon at this price. At only £16.5million, the Hammers would welcome a proven goalscorer in the Premier League, who impressed massively during his time on loan at Newcastle United last season. The 29-year-old is in the prime of his career right now, and despite the fact he turns 30-years-old in September, he is still a mainstay in the Venezuelan national side and performed to his highest ability in the top flight last season. He averages five aerial battle successes per 90 minutes in the league [WhoScored], which also proves his ability to take on the physical load required from a lone striker. With the ongoing saga revolving Gomez, it would be in the club’s best interests to keep all of their options wide open.
