OPINION
The Evening Standard reported on Monday that West Ham United midfielder Pedro Obiang is close to completing a move to Italian side Sassuolo, something also claimed by trusted Hammers insider ExWHUemployee on their personal Twitter account recently. Clearly the Equatorial Guinea international is destined for the London Stadium exit door this summer, and it appears a return to Serie A is imminent. Obiang excelled over there for several years with Sampdoria, which is what earned him his move to east London, but now it appears he is heading back to the peninsula. The West Ham supporters, though, aren’t happy at the prospect of the 27-year-old being let go, unless a replacement comes in. There seems to be a feeling amongst the Hammers faithful that the squad is very light at the moment. You can see why they think that, too, because Pellegrini’s options are extremely top heavy. He doesn’t have a lot of quality second options. For example, if Obiang leaves, the Hammers’ back up to Declan Rice in defensive midfield will be 33-year-old Carlos Sanchez. When you put it like that, it’s easy to see why they aren’t happy about Obiang departing.
