West Ham are still in the race to sign Maxi Gomez, despite him being on the verge of a move to Valencia, according to ExWHUemployee.
The Celta Vigo striker looks set to stay in Spain, with Marca reporting that a fee has been agreed between the two La Liga sides.
But while a deal looks all but done, the Hammers are still interested in hijacking the 6’1″ colossus [Transfermarkt] transfer.
Writing on his personal Twitter account, Ex said: “I can’t really put a timeline on when this is going to be concluded, negotiations will continue today.
“At this point he is still more likely to join Valencia but apparently we are trying to get him to join here.”
It’s looking less and less likely, but the Hammers aren’t giving up hope just yet. Gomez seems destined to stay in Spain, and that is a real shame, but West Ham will feel that they still have a chance until the moment that he puts pen to paper. Make no mistake, this will be an absolute slog, and there is every chance that the Irons’ efforts will be in vain. But that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t still try. Gomez was a standout performer for a fairly dire Celta Vigo side last season, and 4.3 aerial duels won, as well the fact that he was dispossessed just 1.3 times per 90 minutes [Whoscored] shows a player who would be a fantastic addition to any Premier League side. Realistically, the Hammers probably are going to have to look elsewhere for striker, but they would kick themselves if they didn’t even try for Gomez.
