Cascarino takes passing dig at Arnautovic

Former Republic of Ireland international Tony Cascarino has taken a sly dig at former West Ham United attacker Marko Arnautovic.

The Austrian international departed the club earlier this summer after finally getting his wish to move to China in a big money-chasing move.

And Cascarino believes the 30-year-old is an example of when player power goes wrong: “Marko Arnautovic was doing that at West Ham, he’s an obvious example,” he told talkSPORT [28/07; 08:28].

Yeah, Arnautovic is very much an example of when player power goes wrong. Cascarino was actually making a bigger point about how player power, when utilised properly, can be a very positive thing. He was saying that at places like Manchester United, in the days of Roy Keane, Paul Ince etc., player power was done properly. Those sort of guys were the senior men in the dressing room and so they kept everyone in check and made sure that standards were kept high and at the sort of level that manager Sir Alex Ferguson wanted them. Having people like that in your dressing room is generally a positive thing and aids the performance of the team on match days. However, Arnautovic’s situation definitely wasn’t one of those. He was just looking out for himself, trying to ‘secure the bag’ as the kids say. Essentially he was after a move to a club where he could earn more money than what he was on at West Ham, which is eventually what happened. But he caused significant uproar in the process.
