West Ham are being forced to wait to see whether Maxi Gomez will accept a move to the club as the player eyes up a switch to London rivals Tottenham, according to El Desmarque.
The Spanish publication claim on their website that the Hammers have seen a bid rejected by Celta Vigo for the 22-year-old striker, their offer coming in at £29million (€32million), with the La Liga outfit accepting that his departure this summer is inevitable.
The report states that the Uruguay international, who has 12 caps for his country, is hoping for a move to a bigger club than the Irons and that he is biding his time to see how serious Tottenham’s interest in his capture.
Opinion
Ouch. West Ham will be thinking they can offer Gomez the opportunity to make a name for himself as a regular starter in the Premier League but it appears as though the player thinks the Irons are beneath him and his quality. His 13 goals in La Liga are by no means bad statistics but if he thinks that makes him worthy of turning down the Hammers for, he needs to think again. At Tottenham he would be used solely as back up to Harry Kane, just as Fernando Llorente has been during his time in north London. At West Ham he could be playing first team football week in, week out, establishing himself as one of the most lethal hitmen England’s top flight has to offer. Yes, the Irons might not be playing European football or challenging at the top of the table but he needs to realise that at 22-years-old, he cannot expect everything to come his way straight off the bat. A move to West Ham would do him the world of good – it remains to be seen whether he realises that before the summer is over.
