If West Ham United are ever going to secure European football in the near future, let alone break the glass ceiling that is the top six, then they will need to add top class quality to their squad.
There will likely be something of a clearing out process at the London Stadium this summer, and it’s imperative that the Hammers add some more top drawer talent to go with the excellent transfer window they enjoyed just over a year ago.
They’ll be over the moon, then, that Italian outlet Calcio Mercato reported on Tuesday that the club have held talks with the entourage of AC Milan star Hakan Calhanoglu.
Leicester City are also thought to be admirers of the Turkey international, but it’s West Ham who have been on the Serie A star’s trail for some time now.
The club’s supporters will surely be pinching themselves to be linked with a player of this quality. Calhanoglu is a proven top class playmaker who has excelled in both the Bundesliga and the Italian top flight.
If the Hammers were able to bring him in it would be a tremendous boost to Manuel Pellegrini’s side, allowing the Chilean to pair him with players like Felipe Anderson and Manuel Lanzini in midfield.
You don’t become a regular for Milan for nothing, and Calhanoglu is most definitely that. He is a truly elite level talent who is still a few years off his prime at just 25 years of age.
Pellegrini should make his signing an absolutely priority this summer – he could take this West Ham team to new heights next season.
