With West Ham United striker Andy Carroll set to leave in the summer when his contract is up, and the futures of Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez remaining unclear, it would make sense to sign a number of new faces soon.

Lucas Perez’s future remains unclear after a very underwhelming campaign for the Hammers, so if Manuel Pellegrini is to prioritise one position in particular, it should be recruiting someone who can lead the line.

Back in January, the Daily Mail reported that West Ham were in talks to sign Celta Vigo forward Maxi Gomez, but obviously a move never materialised for the 22-year-old.

However, they will surely sweat now that the same newspaper has reported that Tottenham have entered the race for his signature. It states that the Irons remain keen on the attacker, but the chances of signing him have surely decreased now that Spurs are firmly in the frame.

With West Ham at risk of losing all four of their strikers this summer, there is no doubt that they would consider going back in for Gomez in a few months’ time.

They could be set for another blow though, as the report says that Gomez is keen to move to a club where he has the chance of competing in Europe. At the moment, Spurs can offer that – West Ham on the other hand, cannot guarantee that at the moment.

If they can achieve their aim of qualifying for the Europa League, then they have a better chance of landing the Uruguayan in the summer. If they do not, then they might as well kiss goodbye to the prospect of snapping him up.

Either way, they will surely sweat buckets now that Tottenham are firmly in the race to sign him.
