West Ham United are leading the race to sign Liverpool right-back Nathaniel Clyne, according to Football Insider.

The reputable football news site reports that the Hammers are in the hunt to sign the £70,000-a-week [Spotrac] defender – who is currently on loan at Bournemouth – as Liverpool have said that he is free to leave the club in the summer.

The report adds that the Irons are looking for a new right-back to replace Pablo Zabaleta, whose contract runs out at the end of the season – and that Clyne is keen on moving back to London seven years after leaving Crystal Palace.

OPINION

This would be quite an addition for West Ham come the beginning of the transfer window. They need another right-back desperately – Zabaleta is out-of-contract, while Ryan Fredericks cannot be relied upon to bear the burden as the sole player in his position. It is no surprise that Liverpool want to get rid of Clyne, as having Trent Alexander-Arnold excelling in the role is not doing Clyne any favours in the slightest. He had some game time a few months ago when the 20-year-old had been injured, but other than that, it looks like Jurgen Klopp deems him surplus to requirements if he is willing to let him leave in the summer. To be honest, he probably thinks it is wise to cash in on him as it is likely that they are going to sign some players this time around. That being said, West Ham leading the race for him is encouraging, as he is still a quality right-back.
