West Ham United’s move to the London Stadium hasn’t been universally popular by any means, but the Hammers are finally taking steps to fix the arena’s myriad issues.
The latest upgrade they have planned is a new pitch surround in the club’s colours which will cover the running track, which they confirmed on their official Twitter account on Saturday.
That might seem like a minor thing, but the fact that the club are looking to improve things at the London Stadium will surely have the supporters over the moon.
The pitch surround has been a major issue since the stadium opened and there were concerns earlier in the season that the colours of the surround looked too similar to that of West Ham’s London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Obviously that didn’t sit well with the supporters, making this a welcome update. The new surround will be in place in time for the team’s match against Leicester City next Saturday.
This doesn’t fix everything that is wrong with the ground, but you have to say that the club are trying. There’s not much that they can do about the fact that the stadium was built with athletics in mind. The running track is there, meaning that the fans are farther away from the pitch than normal, that doesn’t look like it’s going to change.
However, this change is another step in the right direction and a step closer to making the London Stadium truly feel like the home of West Ham United football club. The supporters will surely appreciate that, at least.
