It seemed as if West Ham had pulled off a massive coup when they managed to sign Samir Nasri at the beginning of January.

Sure, the Frenchman had been out of action for a lengthy stint after he failed to pass a doping test, but picking up a player of his quality, with as much left in the tank as he seemingly had, on a free transfer looked to be an absolute steal.

At first, it looked as if Nasri was going to justify that excitement too. A series of impressive outings, albeit with the caveat of his borderline fitness, seems to confirm that the 31-year-old was ready and raring to go, but things have gone downhill slightly since then.

Nasri picked up his third calf injury in four months on Monday night against Chelsea, not even making it on to the pitch from the bench before he was deemed unable to feature.

That complaint is the latest in what is becoming a worrying trend for the playmaker, and if Manuel Pellegrini’s latest comments are anything to go by, Nasri must be worried about his future at the club.

Speaking in a press conference in which he confirmed that Nasri would miss Saturday’s clash with Manchester United, as quoted by Football.London, the Chilean manager said: “About next season, I don’t know.

“We knew that when Samir came here we had a risk for muscle injuries because he was more than one year without playing so we will see at the end of the season.”

It looked fairly nailed on that Nasri would be handed an extension to the six month deal that brought him to London in the first place, but now, after his manager’s vague comments, where the Frenchman’s future lies is anybody’s guess.
