West Ham forward Javier Hernandez has heaped praise on former Hammer Michael Carrick, describing him as “one of the most underrated players in history”.

The Mexican was teammates with the ex-England international at Manchester United, and speaking to West Ham’s official website, was quick to sing his praises.

He said: “Michael Carrick is one of the most underrated players in history. I played with him, he was such an important player for Manchester United.

“Unfortunately for England there were a lot of midfielders like Scholes, Gerrard, and Lampard, but i think if England had played him in some World Cups, they would have been much more powerful.

“He’s a very complete player and I love watching him when he was a player, and playing with him even more.”

OPINION

Carrick was always one of those players who seemed to be appreciated a lot more by his colleagues than by his fans. That’s not to say that he wasn’t adored by supporters, but consistently you will hear former teammates describe him as an absolute world beater, the kind of player who should go down in history as one of the finest ever. Take Hernandez’s comments, for example. This isn’t your average tip of the cap to a former colleague, this is a player who wholeheartedly believes that he was fortunate to play alongside a world class talent. West Ham can be immensely proud of the roel they played in ensuring he became that player, and his best years might have come at Tottenham and then Manchester United, then can be no denying that impact the Hammers had on helping him become the top level talent that he went on to be.
