West Ham United midfielder Jack Wilshere is unlikely to start for the Hammers any time soon, according to Football London.

The outlet claims that the 27-year-old, having made a brief cameo against Leicester City on Saturday after replacing captain Mark Noble, is probably set for a watching brief for the remainder of the season.

The former Arsenal man has only just returned from his latest injury problem and manager Manuel Pellegrini likely feels that starting him isn’t worth the risk at this point in the campaign.

OPINION

This is probably the most sensible course of action for Wilshere as we come to the close of the season. He’s virtually missed this entire campaign due to one problem or another. Is it really worth starting him now and risking him picking up another issue that will plague him over the summer? No, it’s surely far better to bring him back incrementally, as Pellegrini started to do on Saturday. It was an extremely brief cameo from the England international, but an important one. He does need game time to get back up to speed and to gain a bit of momentum going into the summer, it’s just that it’s probably not worth the risk to start him. So what Pellegrini needs to do is gradually up the amount of minutes that he gives him off the bench. The likes of Declan Rice and Robert Snodgrass have shown that they are worthy of consistently starting games in midfield, so there’s no need to rush Wilshere back.
