West Ham United loan star Sam Byram missed Nottingham Forest’s victory over Middlesbrough with a concussion, according to the Nottingham Post.

The 25-year-old has seen his season largely derailed by injuries, and this latest setback meant he was unable to take to the field as Martin O’Neill’s men claimed a 3-0 win over Boro.

Byram suffered the injury during the Reds’ game against promotion-chasing Sheffield United last Friday and was clearly unable to recover in time for Monday’s contest.

OPINION

Concussions are a huge concern in all walks of life, but particularly in sport, so it’s probably a good thing that Byram didn’t play on Monday. The turnaround from Friday to Monday simply isn’t long enough for his body to have fully recovered from the effects of his clash of heads. You need to allow sufficient time for that to happen and Monday just wasn’t enough. So it was the right decision for him to miss out on the Boro game, and his absence clearly didn’t have too much of a negative effect on O’Neill’s team.

It will have been frustrating for Byram personally to miss yet more game time, particularly when this wasn’t down to a muscle injury or something of that nature. His season has been decimated by injuries and so he’s probably keen to play as much football as he possibly can down the stretch here. However, that was never going to happen on Monday. Hopefully, though, he will have recovered sufficiently to feature against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.
