West Ham have set their sights on Liverpool full-back Nathaniel Clyne, according to Goal.

The Hammers are understood to be ready to do battle with Bournemouth, where the England international is currently on loan, to complete a permanent deal for the 28-year-old.

According to the report, the Reds will demand a fee of around £15 million for the defender.

The Irons are looking to strengthen at right-back, a problem area for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, with veteran option Pablo Zabaleta nearing the end of his career.

OPINION

This would be a fantastic move for the Hammers. Clyne is a proven top tier footballer capable of really improving a problem area for the club. He has international and European experience, and while £15 million is no steal, given the current market, that could prove to be a very decent investment. Zabaleta is, sadly, on his last legs, and has been caught out on more than one occasion this season. Add to the Ryan Fredericks’ persistent injury woes and it’s fairly obvious that reinforcements will have to be brought in. At 28, Clyne still has a lot left to give for a potential suitor, and while his career at Liverpool is evidently over, that doesn’t mean that he can’t still be a really decent player for another aspirational Premier League side. He has shown his quality at Bournemouth during the second half of this season, and the hope would be that he can replicate that kind of form for the Hammers.
