West Ham United midfielder Jack Wilshere has been training with the under-23s as he steps up his recovery from injury, he has confirmed.

The 27-year-old has been getting some vital sessions in with the club’s youth side during the international break as he continues his recovery.

The crocked player has been doing some light training at Rush Green in a bid to make a first team return in the near future after battling with an ankle injury that has kept him sidelined for most of the season.

“I trained with the U23s for the first-time last week, which was good. It’s been great to get on the pitches. You can’t really get that match fitness, and that sharpness, just from running. You need to be around first team players,” he told the club’s website.

“Hopefully in the near future I’ll be involved in the first team and pushing on soon.”

OPINION

It is great that Jack Wilshere has been training with the under-23s recently. He is no doubt closer than ever to making a return, and fingers crossed it happens before the end of the season. Wilshere himself no doubt wants to get some game time in before the campaign ends, so hopefully undergoing some light training with the youth side means that he is one step closer to achieving that. It must damage his confidence being out for so long, and he will certainly be rusty if he does make an appearance this season. This would be expected from him, and he will no doubt be fighting fit and raring to go when the new season starts in August. Hopefully when that time comes, he will not be plagued by injury like he has been this term. Wilshere is a talented player, and he will surely be hoping to cause Manuel Pellegrini a selection headache.
