West Ham United remain interested in signing Besiktas defender Gary Medel, according to Claret and Hugh.

The reliable website – which is a trusted source of news on the Hammers – have claimed that boss Manuel Pellegrini is still keen on the 31-year-old, and says that he looks like he is going to make a summer move for the veteran.

Sky Sports reported in December that the Hammers were in ongoing talks with the South American player over a possible winter switch, with Pellegrini being keen on wanting a deal wrapped up – but the move never materialised.

OPINION

It remains to be seen just why Pellegrini is so keen on landing Medel – who has 34 Premier League appearances – from Turkey. There is no doubting that he was a great player in previous years for the likes of Cardiff City and Inter Milan, but that does not mean that he is in the same form now as he was back then. Also, look how signing older midfielders has turned out for West Ham recently. Carlos Sanchez was sidelined for the entire season – not long after joining in the summer – while Jack Wilshere has missed the majority of it too. If the club were adamant on signing Medel, where would that put the likes of Sanchez and Wilshere then? They would surely be doomed to a permanent residence on the West Ham sidelines, which does not work out for anyone. The Irons should avoid this move like the plague, as it is only going to end up in more misery for them if they do. If they want a midfielder, sign a younger one.
