OPINION
It was always going to be risky move, West Ham’s social media team wishing Dimitri Payet a happy birthday on Twitter. The former Hammer turns 32 today (Friday), and the club took it upon themselves to wish him all the best, to a fairly mixed reaction from fans. There were those who acknowledged just how important he had been for the Irons back when he was at his effortless, majestic peak, but there were also those expressed sentiments that were rather less amicable. Payet, of course, forced through a move to Marseille at a time when the entire West Ham side was essentially built around his creative talents, and that kind of sudden departure, giving almost no consideration to fans or the club that had been paying his wages for a long while, is always going to leave a bad taste in the mouth. The Frenchman was incredible for the Hammers, but all of that is quickly forgotten when you pull a stunt like Payet did. At the end of the day, he’s a professional, and he has no obligation to stay at a club if he doesn’t want to, but after the way he left, maybe a birthday wish wasn’t brightest of ideas.
