West Ham United have sent scouts to run the rule over Millwall right back Mahlon Romeo, according to The Daily Express.

The newspaper claims that the Hammers have taken a look at the 12-cap Antigua and Barbuda international, while clubs in the Championship also have their eyes on him.

The 23-year-old is out of contract in the summer and so could make the move from the Hammers’ fiercest rivals for nothing.

However, Rangers will likely provide stiff competition for him. Steven Gerrard is interested in signing Romeo as a potential replacement for captain James Tavernier.

OPINION

This is an interesting one. You don’t get many players crossing the Millwall-West Ham divide, due to the rivalry’s status as one of the fiercest and most violent in England. It would take a brave man to swap The Den for the London Stadium. However, the Hammers could soon find themselves with a need at right back. Veteran Pablo Zabaleta’s contract is up at the end of the season and no decision has seemingly been made regarding his future. That would leave just Ryan Fredericks as a senior right back at the club. If that winds up being the case then somebody else will need to be brought in at the position. West Ham pulled off a similar signing with the aforementioned Fredericks last summer, bagging a proven Championship talent for nothing. Whether Romeo would be able to genuinely compete with the former Fulham man or not is unknown, but as a free transfer he’d certainly be worth a shot.
