West Ham United midfielder Robert Snodgrass’s recent FA charge for allegedly being abusive to drug testers is nothing but a big misunderstanding, according to Claret & Hugh.

The reliable Hammers news source states that sources who were present at the alleged incident have informed them that Snodgrass made a jokey comment to the drug testers which caused unintended offence.

The BBC reported on Monday that the FA had handed Snodgrass a charge for an incident that took place on February 6. Snodgrass was not being tested nor did he refuse a drug test.

The Scotland international has until March 18 to respond to the charge.

OPINION

This is a bit of a messy situation for everyone involved. Obviously only the people who were there know what really happened, so we’ll have to wait and see how Snodgrass answers this charge. The veteran midfielder is known as a bit of a jokey character, but you can’t just say whatever you want behind the caveat of ‘banter’. If Snodgrass made a good natured joke then that’s one thing, but it’s unlikely that the drug testers would be offended by and resultantly report something like that. Some things do just cross the line and perhaps this was one of them. However, this could simply be a misunderstanding as the report says. It was probably unwise for Snodgrass to get involved with the drug testers at all considering the fact that he wasn’t the one being tested. Really he should have stayed away and let them get on with the job they were there to do. He is now facing the consequences of something that may or may not be a misunderstanding. We’ll have to wait and see what happens next.
