Throughout the January transfer window, there was constantly talk about where young West Ham defender Reece Oxford would end up.

His destination ended up being Bundesliga side Augsburg, who he joined on loan for the rest of the season – but if his recent display is anything to go by, they may be regretting it slightly.

His team lost 4-0 to Werder Bremen on Sunday – as relayed by Claret and Hugh – with the 20-year-old starting in the centre of the defence, but he was exposed time and time again, with the third goal showcasing him at his absolute worst after an opposition player slid past him to fire into the far corner.

Manuel Pellegrini is no doubt counting his lucky stars that the club sent Oxford out on loan if this horror show is anything to go by, and to be honest, it does not bode well for the rest of his spell in Germany.

The Bundesliga is famous for having some top-class teams – such as Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund – with some top-class players, so if Oxford cannot handle the quality of Werder Bremen, how on earth can he be expected to deal with the danger of Munich and Dortmund?

It is actually quite a frightening prospect, so the Hammers will be glad that they got rid of him for the time being.

If these types of displays continue, then they will definitely push for Augsburg to secure a permanent deal for the youngster, as there is no place at the club for a defender who is exposed so easily.

One thing is for sure, many Irons supporters will not want the 6ft 3in [Transfermarkt] giant back at the London Stadium this summer after witnessing this outing.

Either way, Pellegrini must count his lucky stars that he is absent, as he really was woeful on Sunday.
