West Ham United are discussing a new deal for right-back Ben Johnson, according to Claret and Hugh.

The West Ham website – a reliable source of news on the Hammers – have reported that the club have entered talks with the 19-year-old’s representatives over a new deal that could keep him at the London Stadium for another four years.

The report adds that he is set to agree terms with the Irons on this new deal, and that talks have started with other young player’s agents over extending their stays too.

OPINION

Ben Johnson is not  name widely known by many West Ham fans, but that certainly would have changed after he was thrown in at the deep end in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday night, especially as he was playing at left-back as opposed to right-back. With Aaron Cresswell and Arthur Masuaku absent, Pellegrini had no choice but to include Johnson in his starting XI – and he should not have regretted it. He did not back down once when threatened by the likes of Riyad Mahrez, and this bodes extremely well going forward. Johnson clearly has a future with the Hammers, and the fact that he is in talks over a new deal has only reinforced that. He deserves the chance to progress and develop at a club like West Ham, because if they can nuture the likes of Declan Rice and Grady Diangana to greatness, then they can certainly do the same with him. Keeping Johnson on for another four years will also save West Ham pennies in the long run, as it means they will not need to fork out on another right-back for a while.
