West Ham have rejected a loan offer from Eredivisie side Heerenveen for young defender Reece Oxford, according to Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol.

Solhekol reports on his personal Twitter account that the Hammers have dismissed the Dutch sides advances for the 20-year-old outcast, who has been heavily linked with an exit this month.

It is further stated that Oxford is now ready to see out his contract, which runs until 2021, due to the ‘politics’ regarding his reputation at the club.

OPINION

It was always a long shot for Heerenveen to try and sign Oxford, but if you don’t ask you don’t get. In this case they fell short, but you can see why they made an attempt to sign the 20-year-old. Oxford has been stuck on the fringes at West Ham for several seasons now, making little progress since becoming their youngest-ever player in 2015. A mildly successful spell in the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach raised hopes of another move to Germany, but that does not look to have materialised. Nottingham Forest were also linked with an £8million move this month, but again that has not come to fruition. Unfortunately for Oxford it looks like he’s set for another stay at West Ham, and according to Solhekol he is ready to see out his deal. That looks to be a foolish move with first-team football unlikely to come in that time, with a summer exit surely the best option for all parties.
