West Ham have enquired about the possibility of a last-gasp deal for Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper report that the Hammers are one of multiple clubs who have launched enquiries for the France international, who is considering his next move after the arrival of Gonzalo Higuain.

The Mail claim that West Ham are looking to bring in another attacker as concerns grow over the injury suffered by Marko Arnautovic against Wolves on Tuesday night.

It is said that Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri is keen for the £120,000-a-week attacker [Spotrac] to remain at Stamford Bridge.

OPINION

This would be a big signing for West Ham if they are able to pull it off, with Giroud being a striker who knows the Premier League inside out. The France international has scored 77 goals in the division over his spells at Arsenal and Chelsea, and would bring that much-needed experience to the West Ham forward line. There were rumours that the Hammers were in for the 32-year-old over the summer so it is not really surprising to see them linked with him again, but you do wonder about the long-term viability of such a move. The Irons are known to be extremely interested in bringing in Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez as the long-term replacement for Arnautovic, who is expected to leave in the summer, so where would that leave Giroud? The Frenchman has played second fiddle for much of his time in the Premier League, and is unlikely to swap Stamford Bridge for the London Stadium only to sit on the bench again.
