West Ham United have held more discussions with Celta Vigo over the potential transfer of their striker Maxi Gomez, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reports on their website that the Hammers were put off a summer deal for the La Liga forward, who has nine caps for Uruguay, as the club wanted too much money for his services when negotiations took place in the summer.

Gomez – who is rated at £40million – is being viewed as a possible replacement for Marko Arnautovic, who has been touted with a move to China recently, however, a bid of £35 million from Shanghai SIPG was knocked back by the Irons.

OPINION

Maxi Gomez looks like a decent option if Arnautovic ended up leaving this month, as his nine goals and five assists in 19 games looks like a pretty promising record. However, the Hammers will be hoping that Celta Vigo lower their price tag from the summer. Being valued at £40 million despite the club being one point from the relegation zone is rather steep, and there is no way that West Ham will pay that sort of money for a player in that situation. If he had scored more goals this season, it would make more sense to increase the demands for him – but seeing as he has only scored nine, that should not be the case. The fact that West Ham have re-opened talks with Celta Vigo over a possible move is a step in the right direction though – as who knows where Arnautovic will end up going this month.
