West Ham United have had a bid of £31million rejected by Genoa for their prolific striker Krzysztof Piatek, according to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla.

The journalist wrote on his website that the Hammers are keen on signing the Poland international in case Marko Arnautovic leaves this month, so they tried their luck with a £31million offer which was then knocked back.

The report adds that Genoa value their talisman – who has scored 19 goals in 21 games this season – at around £40million, and he is on around £10,000-a-week at the club.

OPINION

It is no surprise in the slightest that West Ham are going after a striker like Piatek. His impressive form has attracted some admirers, and who can blame them? If Arnautovic were to leave the club – a prospect which is looking ever more likely – the Irons need a proven hitman to take his place instantly. Piatek is just that player, although it looks like West Ham will have to go in with a higher bid if they are to eventually land him. £40 million plus bonuses is not cheap though, so it remains to be seen just how serious West Ham are about signing him. If they do, what an addition he would be the team, however, this would depend on whether he is able to replicate his form in Serie A in the Premier League. They are two very different leagues, and Felipe Anderson has already proved that it takes a while to settle in when moving from Italy.
