West Ham United could complete the club-record signing of Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez within 24 hours, according to Sky Sports

The broadcaster claim in their live transfer blog [11:26] that the Hammers will meet the £45million release clause for the Uruguay international.

Sky Sports claim that talks are ongoing about an arrangement to loan back the 22-year-old to Vigo until the summer, with West Ham seeking a reduction in price for that to happen.

It is said that there is still a lot of work to do, but there is increasing confidence that a deal will be agreed soon.

OPINION

This could be huge for West Ham. The club broke their transfer record twice in the summer, with that figure currently standing at the £36million they paid for Felipe Anderson. For them to then break it again in the next window would be a huge signal of intent from the board, who have really backed manager Manuel Pellegrini with some big funds. Gomez is essentially set to replace Marko Arnautovic at the London Stadium, with the Austria international signing a new deal but still remaining likely to leave the club in the summer window. The Hammers expect to raise around £45million from his sale, meaning that basically pays for Gomez, but they will still be agreeing such a deal ahead of time in a big statement of their intentions. West Ham fans should be excited about seeing Gomez play, with the young Uruguayan being extremely highly-rated on the continent and in his homeland.
