West Ham officials are due to jet to Turkey in the coming days to continue talks with Besiktas over signing Chilean international Gary Medel, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster claim that the Hammers are interested in signing the South American defender with Manuel Pellegrini keen for a deal to be done as soon as possible.

Sky Sports report that the Hammers are yet to make a formal offer for Medel but the imminent discussions are aiming to see negotiations develop.

OPINION

Medel can play as a centre-back, right-back as well as a defensive midfielder and comes with some Premier League experience having previously played for Cardiff City. For that reason pursuing the 31-year-old ahead of the January transfer window opening seems like a smart move as he could definitely do a job.  Pellegrini could do with cover for the centre of his defence, with Winston Reid still on the sidelines, and would benefit from having another right-back as Ryan Fredericks has struggled to impress since joining in the summer and Pablo Zabaleta can’t be expected to play every game. Also while Declan Rice has more than impressed a defensive midfielder, it would be nice to have experienced cover in that position in the form of Medel. Given that Sky Sports believe Hammers officials are all set to get the ball rolling in their pursuit of Medel, this definitely sounds like there is a good chance of the South American enforcer rocking up at the London Stadium.
