OPINION

There is a player who West Ham United have sent out on loan who is not particularly having the best of times at the moment – and quite frankly he is looking like a waste of space no matter where he goes.

Striker Toni Martinez was sent out on loan to Spanish second-tier side Rayo Majadahonda in the summer transfer window, but he has only been able to muster up just two goals in the ten appearances that he has made for the side.

Yes, he did net an impressive 23 goals in 29 outings for the under-23s, but that certainly has not translated onto the pitch in this campaign – and Manuel Pellegrini cannot afford to take a punt on someone who like to blow hot and cold.

This is why he must be ruthless and axe the 21-year-old when he returns from his loan spell in the summer, despite reliable journalist Sam Inkersole revealing that the Irons are willing to be patient with him.

Why is this the case? He has clearly shown that he is not able to cut it at a team in the second division of Spanish football, so why would he suddenly be able to thrive in West Ham’s first team?

His contract expires in the summer anyway, so the best thing for everybody is to not bothering to renew it.

The likes of Marko Arnautovic are ahead of him in the pecking order, as well as the likes of Javier Hernandez, Lucas Perez and Andy Carroll – so it is not like he is going to be given a first team opportunity upon his return.

He needs to make a serious mark on this Spanish league if he is to salvage his future in East London, but that does not look like it will happen anytime soon.

Time for Pellegrini to get his axe out and start sharpening it, as Martinez’ future at West Ham is pretty much buried.
