Bournemouth striker Jermaine Defoe has admitted that he would like to join forces with West Ham United in January, according to exWHUemployee.

The club insider – who is a reliable source of news on the Hammers – revealed in the West Ham Way podcast that the proven Premier League talent said he “would love” to return to the Irons in the next transfer window.

However, the insider said that Defoe poured cold water over that idea, admitting that his age – he is 36-years-old – and the fact he is not playing very much would not allow that move to happen.

OPINION

Many strikers would have hung up their boots at the age of 36, but not Defoe. He is currently at Bournemouth, and even though he is not playing vert regularly, it is astonishing that he is still in the Premier League. He has been a proven forward throughout his time in the top-flight and there is no denying that he was world-class on his day, but those days are now long behind him. At his age, there is not much else he can offer to a club – and given that he is on £103,000-a-week [Spotrac] with the Cherries, the likelihood of meeting the wage of a player who does not play very much seems very slim. West Ham would not want to cough up this amount of money per week to an aging striker, so the fact he has poured cold water over him joining will actually be a relief to many supporters.
