Many West Ham fans on social media slammed Arthur Masuaku for his first-half display during Friday night’s clash with Brighton.

The Seagulls took the lead through Glenn Murray and Chris Hughton’s side then managed to hold on to their 1-0 lead into the break.

Despite only having witnessed 45 minutes of their side playing, a large section of Hammers supporters were fuming with one player in particular after going a goal down, with that man being Masuaku.

One Hammers fan tweeted that the 24-year-old left-back was a liability while another said no matter how great he was going forward, he needs to work on the defensive side of his game.

OPINION

Masuaku is clearly the weak link of Manuel Pellegrini’s current side and it’s no surprise that Hammers fans are calling out despite only witnessing 45 minutes of action. The left-back had no clue what he was doing during the Seagulls’ opening goal and seemed to blame his teammates around him. However Masuaku is the one who has questions to answer as he appeared to be ball watching instead of keeping an eye on his man. When you consider that he was marking Murray, easily Brighton’s star attacker, he should have been fully focused. It’ll be interesting to see how Masuaku does in the second half as after a woeful first 45 minutes, he can’t possibly do any worse. Pellegrini may need to have a word in his ear to get him to focus on his defensive duties as clearly he is prioritising going forward as it stands which is letting his side down.
