Paul Scholes shared that Manchester United could have done with having West Ham’s attacking trio on Saturday when the two sides clashed.

The retired midfielder expressed this opinion after watching the Hammers cruise to a 3-1 victory over his former side at the London Stadium.

Scholes panned the performances of RomeluĀ Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial and suggested that perhaps Felipe Anderson, Marko Arnautovic and Andriy Yarmolenko would have been able to win the game for Man United.

“We talk about the effort as you rightly said but that is the first thing you expect from a Manchester United player but any footballer,” explained Scholes on BT Sport following the Hammers’ clash with Man United (as seen in a clip uploaded to the broadcaster’s Twitter).

“But I just wonder if the quality is there as well, y’know the amount of times I would have been saying are these players really good enough, they’ve not really shown that they are, I don’t think.

“I think if United possibly had West Ham’s front three today then it could have been a different story, the lack of movement from Lukaku, Martial, we know he’s got ability, we know Rashford’s got ability but they’ve not shown it anywhere near enough.”

OPINION

Scholes is always vocal about Manchester United for obvious reasons and it’s clear he wasn’t impressed that they crashed to a 3-1 loss to the Hammers on Saturday. Jose Mourinho’s side were disappointing all over the field and it’s no surprise that Scholes made a comment to suggest that he wouldn’t have minded seeing some of the Hammers players play for their opponentsĀ on Saturday. Arnautovic, Anderson and Yarmolenko all submitted impressive displays on Saturday and it’s no surprise they’ve been indirectly praised by a legendary figure in the game. The attacking trio were lively throughout the whole encounter and probably had the Man United defence shaking everytime they charged through on goal at them. It’ll be interesting to see if the Hammers’ front three can continue to perform to the level they did on Saturday as surely they’re destined to improve as two of them only joined in the summer, so they are still settling in.
