Dean Ashton claimed that David Moyes would be the first name on West Ham’s list if the club opted to replace Manuel Pellegrini.

The retired forward delivered his verdict on Moyes time at the Hammers and shared that he wasn’t sure whether he’d be the right manager for the club in the long-term if he ended up replacing Pellegrini.

“I think he did well,” Ashton stated when on the subject of Moyes, as quoted by the Daily Express.

“But there were plenty of games that didn’t go well. They were very inconsistent, I’m not naive to think that just because Pellegrini is struggling that Moyes is the messiah.

“Because they had some poor games alongside some good wins, he would be the first name to come out, because he showed he can manage the pressure of coaching a team like West Ham.

“He’s shown he can get the best from the players and Marko Arnautovic in particular, he was a revelation under David Moyes.

“He’d be the first man on the list but I’m not sure if he’s the right man for the long-term.”

Moyes guided the Hammers to Premier League survival last season before departing the club in the summer after not being offered a deal to extend his stay at the London Stadium.

OPINION

Ashton is right to be sceptical about the Hammers bringing Moyes back to the club as there was a reason why he left in the summer. The 55-year-old may have saved the Hammers from relegation but his football was painful to watch. The Hammers want to be competing in the top-half of the Premier League and while Moyes did a respectable job at the club, his style of football doesn’t seem like it would see the club competing for a place in Europe. However with that in mind, it is hard to ignore that Pellegrini is struggling to gel his team together currently. The manager is yet to see his side rack up a league point on his watch and when you looking at the club’s upcoming fixtures, then it’s hard to see when the points will start rolling in. The Hammers do have a chance of gaining points off the Toffees this Sunday at Goodison Park as they are looking short of numbers but if they fail to snatch that opportunity then the pressure on Pellegrini may prove to be unbearable.
