West Ham appear to be set to sign Carlos Sanchez after the Fiorentina enforcer flew into London on Wednesday night for a medical, according to reliable journalist Sam Inkersole.

The sports writer, who works for news outlet football.london, claimed on his personal Twitter account that the Colombia international is likely to sign before the 5pm deadline where he will join a long list of transfer signings made this summer by the Hammers.

Sanchez, who has made 88 international caps for Colombia, also has Premier League experience to his name after a two-year spell with Aston Villa before moving to Fiorentina after the Villans suffered relegation to the Championship.

The defensive midfielder was the first player to be sent off at this summer’s World Cup, receiving death threats for his red card as he gave away a penalty in Colombia’s opening group match against Japan.

OPINION

The Hammers have endured a busy transfer window this summer yet Pellegrini has been backed to bring in the many players he desires. Although Carlos Sanchez gave away the penalty for England’s goal against Colombia in the last 16 which ultimately led to the Three Lions’ penalty shoot-out win, he will be a much-needed addition to the squad if West Ham are going to tidy up their poor defensive problems that they possessed last season. Sitting in a defensive role in midfield, Sanchez should be able to sit in front of the defence, attempting to gain possession to allow the more skilful players more freedom in attack. His age is interesting, with Pellegrini opting for a character with vast experience of the game rather than an upcoming youngster. Sanchez has played for Villa and will know what to expect in the top flight rather than coming into the English division unaware of the many different qualities needed to succeed in the Premier League.
