West Ham United have had an offer knocked back by Barcelona for their midfielder Andre Gomes, according to Super Deporte.

The Spanish outlet report on their website that the offer that the Hammers submitted for the 6″2 (source: Transfermarkt) pass master was not yet enough to satisfy the demands of the La Liga giants.

Barcelona are only interested in offloading their 25-year-old on a permanent basis, but with time running out until the transfer window ends, they may be open to letting their player leave for a loan spell.

The enforcer joined Barcelona in the summer of 2016, and only made 16 appearances in Spain’s top flight in the 2017/2018 campaign.

OPINION

The news that Barcelona have knocked back an offer from West Ham is surely going to be a bitter blow for them. There is not much time left in this transfer window, and it is not helpful that they are playing hard ball over Andre Gomes. They face competition from Valencia for his signature, and the Spaniard may prefer the option of staying put in Spain rather than making the move to England and uprooting himself. However, he would undoubtedly be seeking regular football once again, and he may be tempted to move to East London if the Hammers make an imminent offer for his services. Barcelona clearly do not need him at the club if they are willing to offload him, so it does not make sense that they would not accept their offer. Nevertheless, West Ham should persevere with their interest, and make sure that Gomes’ next destination is the London Stadium as he is a brilliant passer of the ball which has proven in his past 109 La Liga outings.
