West Ham United are eyeing a deal for Fiorentina midfielder Carlos Sanchez, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper reports on their website that the Hammers are hoping to make the 6ft tall ex-Aston Villa enforcer their tenth swoop of the summer, with Sanchez already in talks over a move to the London Stadium.

Arsenal striker Lucas Perez is potentially joining the Irons as boss Manuel Pellegrini’s ninth signing, and Colombian international Sanchez is now being lined up as the tenth.

He spent the duration of last season on loan at Espanyol, and has over 80 caps for his country.

OPINION

West Ham are set to bring their number of signings into the double figures if this swoop for Carlos Sanchez goes to plan. Pellegrini has stated his intentions to bring in a defensive midfielder, and he may have found the answer in Sanchez. He already has previous Premier League experience having spent three years at Aston Villa, where he left last summer for Serie A. However, one of the issues in signing Sanchez is his age, and at 32-years-old, he is not likely to be a long-term option for the Hammers. He has the experience to do well in the top flight, but Pellegrini could have seeked out another option who was slightly younger. The Chilean needs a player who can feature in his long-term plans and unfortunately for Sanchez, he does not fit into that bracket right now. Bringing players at his age is a risk, as they are more likely to be slower – and this is a potential signing that Pellegrini could regret very soon.
