West Ham are attempting to negotiate terms of a loan deal for Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes with Wednesday set to be a key day in proceedings, according to Sport.

The Catalan newspaper report in their print edition on Wednesday that the Hammers would like to take the 25-year-old Portugal international on loan with an option to buy at the end of the season.

Sport claim however that the terms may end up including an obligation to buy the pass master instead, but no potential fee is mentioned for that to happen.

It is said that today (Wednesday) is set to be a crucial day in negotiations.

OPINION

West Ham have been heavily linked with a move for Gomes throughout the summer, and alongside Tottenham, have looked the likeliest destination for the Euro 2016 winner. The 25-year-old pass master has had a rough time of things at the Nou Camp, with Gomes continually finding himself on the bench despite the club paying huge money to sign him from Valencia in 2016. An exit has looked likely for a while, and a move to the Premier League looks to be a good one for him. West Ham could do with an extra midfielder, but the club actually need someone slightly more defensive-minded than Gomes. The Portugal international is at his best going forward, with his pinpoint passing and brilliant touch allowing him to find spaces others can not. That is not to say that this would not be a good move for the Hammers, just that there may be better options on the table. Also, the likelihood of this actually happening seems low when you consider the fact that Gomes is out until October with a hamstring strain.
