OPINION
There is no doubt that West Ham have made a large number of signings to bolster their ranks for the upcoming season, but what they really need is a striker who can be relied upon to deliver the goods.
Step forward Isaac Kiese Thelin, a striker who plays for Belgian side RSC Anderlecht.
The Sun have reported that Newcastle have launched a £5 million bid to land the Swedish frontman, but they face competition from Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow.
However, West Ham must hijack the Magpies’ pursuit of the 26-year-old, and swoop for him themselves in a move that could be the icing on the cake for the Hammers this summer.
The Sweden international netted 19 goals whilst on loan at fellow Belgian side Waasland-Beveren in 2017/2018, a statistic which boss Manuel Pellegrini would be mad not to take advantage of.
West Ham need another striker to support Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez, who it is safe to say have not had the most prolific of seasons recently.
Hernandez arguably struggled to find his form last term and they need a forward who can be relied upon to deliver the goods, and who can bring the best out of their new attacking signings.
The Irons are more than capable of outbidding their league rivals, which is evident through their high amount of spending this summer – but at the same time do not want to go overboard on someone who could end up as backup.
The combination of Thelin with the club’s striking duo up front would provide an even greater attacking threat that would surely propel the East London outfit up the table in no time.
It can be argued that Thelin has not been thoroughly tested at one of Belgium’s lower-ranked teams, but his eye for goal should mean that he can adapt to the competitive nature of the Premier League without a problem.
The club now need to ruin Newcastle’s party and pounce for the World Cup hitman.
